A few important points about lessons

Student age:
All ages. During the consultation lesson I assess whether (if the student is a young child) s/he is big/old enough or should start with a smaller instrument.

Levels:
All levels are welcome. We adapt the programme of study to your previous learning to make sure all aspects are covered.

Fees:
Lessons are pre-booked and paid in blocks of four. The lesson is refunded/rescheduled if cancelled with 24 hours notice. Please contact me for current fees.

Practice:
Is an absolutely vital part of the process. Do not expect miracles from your lessons! Parents to younger beginner pupils are encouraged to participate in lessons (or indeed take lessons themselves) so that they can work with their child at home.

Time for practising:
at first could be as little as 5 to 10 minutes a day but slowly adding up over the years. For better results, I recommend a minimum of 30 minutes a day. Advanced pupils should aim for around 2 hours a day, and professional players do it from 3 to 12 daily hours as necessary.

Exams:
If a student expresses a wish to take grade exams, when I think s/he is ready, I will offer to enter him/her for an exam with TrinityGuildhall or ABSRM. These exams take place 3 times / year. Exams should never be the target for your playing, but merely a means of external validation/assessment of your progress.

Instrument:
Please consult with me before purchasing a new instrument. I am happy to give advice on makes and models, as well as checking second hand instruments. Buying an instrument is in many ways like buying a car. You get what you pay for! For a beginner child, it is sometimes best to buy a cheap instrument while parent and child decides if they will carry on, but expect to buy a new, better one within the next year or two.
